In June 2007 the brand new Crêperie opened at the Meadows.

Chris Bulpitt (Manager of the Crêperie) said; “All our coffees are made using freshly ground Organic FairTrade beans and the Fruit Smoothies have No Artificial additives, preservatives, sweeteners, colourings or added sugar. One of our smoothies will give you 2½ of your 5-a-day! ”

Chris Bulpitt explained the ethos behind the new Crêperie:

As a new start-up business, it is always difficult in the current climate to strike a balance between financial considerations and a desire to be as ‘green' as possible. However, we are working towards the day when all of the products we offer for sale will be Organic and Fairtrade and 100% of our packaging will be biodegradable. We are currently working on an organic batter mix for our crêpes which should be ready towards the end of this year.

We are also adamant that we don't want our customers to pay premium prices for environmentally friendly products. We believe that the prices we charge compare favourably with retailers offering similar products but we have also tried to introduce small innovations to help save the planet.

For example in addition to only using FairTrade organic beans – the only coffee shop in Chelmsford to do this – we also supply, free of charge, Fairtrade sugar sticks and biodegradable wooden stirrers. As we have previously stated our smoothie cups are biodegradable and our wooden sporks (cross between a spoon and a fork!) used for eating takeaway crêpes are also biodegradable. Even our bespoke crêpes cones – which hold the takeaway crêpes– are made from sustainable stocks.

In line with many environmental experts and The Ecologist magazine, we believe that although buying Organic and Fairtrade products is important, it is just as important is to cut down on ‘food miles.' Therefore, wherever possible, it is our policy to buy locally grown and sourced products.
