We appreciate the importance for shopping centres to reduce their environmental impact.  We thank our guests for using our recycling facilities in the mall and in our picnic area.

Sustainable Design & Operation: Our aim is to achieve a green rating by 2016.

Climate Change and Energy Management: Energy consumption is important to us, and we have been diligent in our efforts to reduce consumption and replacing existing lighting with low energy alternatives.  We intend to achieve net zero carbon status by 2016.

Water Management: Our toilets have water efficient flushes and aerators on the push button taps to ensure optimum efficiency. We are currently investigating rain water harvesting for use in flushing our toilets.

Waste Minimisation: We recycle over 70% of our waste on site.  We recycle all waste streams possible, and are the first shopping centre in the country to install a Big Hanna accelerated food composter.  This service enables us to recycle all food waste on site, including meat and fish and turn it in to compost within 6 to 8 weeks, which can be used on our composting sites around the centre.  We are on target to achieve net zero waste to landfill by 2016.

Enhancing Biodiversity and Land Use: The Meadows are corporate members of the Essex Wildlife Trust and actively work with the trust to identify wildlife around the town and assist in their protection.

Responsible sourcing: The Meadows have developed responsible sourcing guidelines to ensure our suppliers and contractors are aligned to our sustainable objectives.

Valuing or Employees: We actively provide learning, skilling and professional development opportunities for our employees.

Community Development: The Meadows have strong links in the community with Chelmsford Borough Council in supporting their river clean ups.  We host the Young Enterprise Awards each year where local schools come into the centre and demonstrate their entrepreneurial skills.

Incident & Injury Free: The Meadows operate incident and injury free and operate an integrated management system.
